Gallagher Bassett Complaints: What to Do if Your Insurance Claim Is Delayed, Rejected or Underpaid

If Gallagher Bassett is handling your insurance claim and you are struggling with delays, unanswered correspondence, repeated document requests, a rejected claim or a settlement you believe is too low, the important question is not simply whether you have received poor service. It is whether something has gone wrong with the claim itself and what should now be done about it.

Understand Gallagher Bassett's role
Separate poor service from the claim dispute
Build the evidence and choose the right route

Many policyholders first hear the name Gallagher Bassett only after something has happened to their home, vehicle, holiday, business or other insured interest. They bought insurance from one organisation, made a claim and then discovered that another company had become involved in assessing, administering or managing it.

When that claim then becomes delayed, disputed or difficult, it can be surprisingly hard to work out who has made the decision, who has authority to change it and where a complaint should actually be directed.

That is why a Gallagher Bassett complaint should rarely begin with nothing more than: "I am unhappy with the service." A stronger approach starts by identifying exactly what has happened to the insurance claim.

Poor service and a poor insurance outcome are not necessarily the same problem. If the real dispute concerns liability, causation, policy cover, the repair scope, valuation or the amount being offered, repeatedly complaining about unanswered emails may never resolve the point that is actually costing you money.

Who is Gallagher Bassett and why are they involved in my insurance claim?

Gallagher Bassett describes itself as a provider of claims and risk-management services in the United Kingdom. Its UK claims-management operations can become involved from notification of a claim through investigation, adjustment and settlement.

Its services include areas such as property, motor, liability, accident and health and travel claims, together with loss adjusting and other claims-management functions.

This means Gallagher Bassett may be heavily involved in handling an insurance claim without necessarily being the insurer that originally sold or underwrote the insurance policy.

That distinction matters. If the claim becomes disputed, establish the identity of the insurer, Gallagher Bassett's role and who has actual authority to make or reconsider the disputed decision.

The current public review picture

Why are people searching for Gallagher Bassett complaints?

Public reviews provide a striking indication of the level of dissatisfaction being expressed by some customers. As at 30 September 2026, the Gallagher Bassett UK Trustpilot profile displayed a score of approximately 1.4 out of 5 from 537 reviews.

Trustpilot displayed 225 reviews during the previous 12 months, while approximately 90% of all reviews shown were one-star.

Trustpilot's review summary identifies recurring criticism involving communication, response times, delays in claim processing, customer service and customers reporting that they were asked to provide documents they believed had already been supplied.

These are reports and opinions from individual reviewers, not findings that Gallagher Bassett has acted wrongly in every case. A poor online review profile should therefore never be used as a substitute for examining the individual policy, evidence and claim.

What types of Gallagher Bassett claim problems might require closer examination?

The exact issue will depend on the policy and the role Gallagher Bassett has been appointed to perform. However, claim problems often fall into several recognisable categories.

01

Claim delayed or apparently stalled

Long periods pass without a meaningful update, documents are repeatedly requested or the policyholder cannot identify what action is actually outstanding.

02

Claim rejected

Cover may be disputed because of policy wording, an exclusion, causation, alleged non-disclosure, insufficient evidence or another substantive issue.

03

Settlement appears too low

Liability may be accepted while the repair scope, reinstatement cost, valuation, business loss or another part of the financial settlement remains disputed.

04

Claim closed or no longer progressing

A file may have been closed because information was said to be outstanding, cover was questioned or an administrative decision was made that the policyholder does not understand.

Is the real problem a complaint — or an insurance dispute?

This is one of the most important distinctions to make.

Imagine a policyholder believes the insured loss is worth £40,000 but the proposed settlement is £17,000. During the claim there may also have been long waits for telephone calls to be returned and several unanswered emails.

The communication problem matters. It may deserve a formal complaint. But proving that communication was poor does not, by itself, demonstrate why another £23,000 should be paid.

The financial dispute may instead concern the scope of works, reinstatement rates, depreciation, betterment, professional fees, policy limits, underinsurance, a technical conclusion or another valuation issue.

A successful complaint about poor communication does not automatically overturn a rejected claim or increase a settlement. The substantive insurance issue still needs to be identified and addressed.

What if Gallagher Bassett is taking too long to deal with the claim?

There is no universal number of days within which every insurance claim must be completed. A simple claim and a major property, liability, subsidence or business-interruption loss can require very different investigations.

The FCA's Insurance Conduct of Business rules require insurers to handle claims promptly and fairly, provide appropriate information about progress and not unreasonably reject claims.

If progress appears to have stopped, do not simply ask, "Can I have an update?" Ask questions that force the current position to become clear.

What remains outstanding?

Ask for each outstanding factual, technical, policy or valuation issue to be identified.

What information is required?

Request a complete list of documents or evidence still needed and why each item is relevant.

Who has the next action?

Establish whether the file is with Gallagher Bassett, the insurer, a loss adjuster, surveyor, medical expert, contractor or another party.

When is that action due?

Ask for a realistic date rather than an open-ended promise that somebody will respond shortly.

Gallagher Bassett keeps asking for documents I have already supplied

Trustpilot's current review summary refers to reviewers reporting repeated requests for documents they said had already been provided. That does not mean every request is unnecessary. There can be legitimate reasons why further evidence is required.

If a document was previously supplied, identify the date, method of delivery and any acknowledgement received. If something different is required, ask precisely what is missing and what issue the additional evidence is intended to resolve.

What if Gallagher Bassett has rejected the insurance claim?

A rejection should be broken down into the reasoning beneath it. Obtain the written decision and identify precisely what is being said.

A rejected claim might depend upon:

  • an exclusion within the policy;
  • a dispute about what caused the damage or loss;
  • wear and tear or gradual deterioration;
  • an allegation that a policy condition was not complied with;
  • alleged non-disclosure or misrepresentation;
  • insufficient evidence of the loss;
  • a loss-adjuster's, engineer's or other expert's conclusion; or
  • a disagreement about whether the circumstances fall within the policy at all.

The policy wording, expert material, photographs, reports, claim chronology and evidence relied upon to reach the conclusion may all need to be examined together.

What if the Gallagher Bassett settlement appears too low?

An insurance dispute does not require a complete rejection. Some of the most significant disputes arise where the insurer accepts the claim but the amount proposed falls substantially short of what the policyholder believes is required.

Depending on the type of claim, ask:

  • What items have been included in the calculation?
  • What has been omitted?
  • What repair method or scope of works has been adopted?
  • What labour or material rates have been used?
  • Have VAT and professional fees been treated correctly?
  • Has depreciation or betterment been applied?
  • Has an average clause or underinsurance reduction been used?
  • Has the insurer rejected quotations or valuations supplied by the policyholder and, if so, why?

What if Gallagher Bassett has closed my claim?

A claim being marked as closed on an administrative system does not, by itself, explain the insurance position.

Ask why the file was closed and request the reason in writing.

"The file is closed" is an administrative status. It is not, on its own, an explanation of why money is or is not payable under an insurance contract.

Who is actually responsible for the decision?

Gallagher Bassett may be carrying out substantial claims-handling work, but the underlying insurance contract will ordinarily identify an insurer or insurers responsible for providing the cover.

When a dispute develops, establish:

  • who underwrote the insurance policy;
  • who appointed Gallagher Bassett;
  • what role Gallagher Bassett is performing;
  • who produced any disputed technical report;
  • who made the coverage or settlement decision; and
  • who has authority to reconsider that decision.

How do I make a formal complaint about Gallagher Bassett?

Gallagher Bassett publishes a UK complaints procedure on its own website. If ordinary chasing has failed, the complaint should be structured around what has happened, what remains unresolved and what outcome is required.

Stage 01 Define the problem

Separate service failures from the underlying insurance decision, valuation or technical dispute.

Stage 02 Build the record

Create a concise chronology, identify documents already supplied and record unanswered requests or unexplained delay.

Stage 03 State the remedy

Explain precisely what you want to happen: a decision, reconsideration, payment, report, repair or another specific outcome.

The current complaints route can be checked on Gallagher Bassett's UK contact and complaints page ↗ .

Before writing a lengthy complaint, identify what would actually resolve the claim

A complaint can easily become an account of everything that has gone wrong since the claim began. That can bury the issue that actually needs to be decided.

Before sending it, ask:

  • What specific decision am I challenging?
  • What policy wording matters?
  • What factual conclusion do I say is wrong?
  • What evidence supports my position?
  • Is another expert report genuinely needed?
  • What exact payment, repair, reconsideration or other remedy am I requesting?

Should I send a Gallagher Bassett complaint to the Financial Ombudsman?

The Financial Ombudsman Service can be available for eligible insurance complaints. For most complaints, the financial business normally has up to eight weeks to investigate and provide its final response.

If you remain unhappy with that response, or the applicable period expires without one, an eligible complaint can usually be referred to FOS, subject to its jurisdiction and time limits.

FOS is a free route. That does not mean every insurance dispute should be rushed there before the underlying claim has been properly understood.

If the dispute concerns causation, expert evidence, policy interpretation, a substantial valuation or another technically important issue, define that case carefully before choosing the escalation route.

How Insurance Dispute Service can help with a Gallagher Bassett-handled claim

Insurance Dispute Service is independent of Gallagher Bassett. We are not affiliated with, instructed by or endorsed by Gallagher Bassett.

We help individuals and businesses whose insurance claims have become rejected, underpaid, seriously delayed or otherwise disputed.

Our starting point is not simply to write another complaint letter. We look at what has happened to the claim and identify the issue that is preventing a satisfactory resolution.

A Gallagher Bassett claim review may involve:

Reviewing the insurance policy and schedule
Examining Gallagher Bassett correspondence
Identifying the insurer and decision authority
Analysing the rejection or settlement position
Reviewing loss-adjuster or expert evidence
Testing repair scopes and valuations
Building a clear claim chronology
Identifying missing or contradictory evidence
Preparing a structured challenge where appropriate
Considering specialist legal or barrister input where required

We do not assume Gallagher Bassett is wrong

The existence of a poor online review profile does not establish that Gallagher Bassett is wrong about your individual claim.

A rejection may be justified. A further document may genuinely be required. A proposed settlement may properly reflect the policy. A delay may have a legitimate technical explanation.

Equally, an apparently authoritative claims decision should not be assumed to be correct merely because it has been communicated by a professional claims organisation.

The correct approach is to test the decision.

What does the policy say? What happened? What evidence exists? What does the expert material actually establish? How was the settlement calculated? Who made the decision? Is there a realistic basis to challenge it?

What should I send Insurance Dispute Service?

  • the insurance policy and schedule;
  • the claim number and insurer details;
  • Gallagher Bassett correspondence;
  • any rejection, closure or settlement letter;
  • reports from loss adjusters, surveyors, engineers or other experts;
  • repair estimates, scopes of works or valuations;
  • relevant photographs and evidence;
  • your formal complaint and any final response; and
  • a simple chronology showing the key dates.

If you have spent weeks or months chasing the claim, the next email should not simply repeat the previous one. Establish the decision, the evidence behind it, the unresolved issue and exactly what needs to happen next.

You can complain yourself for free

You do not have to use Insurance Dispute Service or another claims management business to make a complaint. You can complain directly to the relevant business yourself without charge and, where eligible, can refer an unresolved complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service yourself for free.

Our role is to provide independent assistance where you want help understanding, preparing or challenging the underlying insurance dispute.

Frequently asked questions about Gallagher Bassett complaints

Is Gallagher Bassett an insurance company?

Gallagher Bassett principally describes its UK business as a claims and risk-management provider. It can perform claims handling, loss adjusting and other services for insurers and other organisations.

Why is Gallagher Bassett handling my insurance claim?

Insurers and other organisations can outsource claims-handling functions to specialist businesses. Gallagher Bassett may have been appointed to administer, investigate, adjust or otherwise manage parts of the claim.

What is Gallagher Bassett's Trustpilot rating?

When this article was checked on 30 September 2026, Gallagher Bassett UK's Trustpilot profile displayed a rating of approximately 1.4 out of 5 from 537 reviews, with 225 reviews in the previous 12 months and approximately 90% one-star reviews.

Does a poor Trustpilot rating prove my claim has been handled wrongly?

No. Online reviews reflect individual customer experiences and opinions. Your own claim needs to be assessed against its policy wording, evidence, correspondence and the decision being challenged.

Can I complain if Gallagher Bassett is taking too long?

Yes. Poor communication or delay can form part of a complaint. However, first establish what is outstanding, who has the next action and whether there is a legitimate reason for the delay.

Can Insurance Dispute Service help if Gallagher Bassett rejected my claim?

We can review suitable rejected claims to understand the policy wording, reasoning and evidence and identify whether there appears to be a credible basis for challenge. No particular outcome can be guaranteed.

What if Gallagher Bassett has offered me too little?

The settlement should be broken down so the disputed figure can be identified. Depending on the claim, the issue may involve repair scope, valuations, contractor rates, depreciation, underinsurance, policy limits or another part of the calculation.

Can I go directly to the Financial Ombudsman Service?

The financial business generally needs the opportunity to consider the complaint first. Eligible complainants can then usually refer the matter to FOS if they remain dissatisfied, subject to the Ombudsman's jurisdiction and time limits.
